How Innocent are YOU?!

So, How innocent are you? A while back a FABULOUS former student of mine texted me and told me write a blog about the song Innocent by Taylor Swift. I told her since she though of it then it's on her! So, Today we have a guest blogger! Samantha Corker and Taylor Swift's Innocent!

Guess you really did it this time
Left yourself in your war path
Lost your balance on a tightrope
Lost your mind trying to get it back
Wasn't it easier in your lunchbox days
Always a bigger bed to crawl into
Wasn't it beautiful when you believed in everything
And everybody believed in you

It's alright just wait and see, your string of lights are still bright to me
Oh, who you are is not where you've been
You're still an innocent
Still an innocent

Did some things you can't speak of
But at night you live it all again
You wouldn't be shattered on the floor now
If only you had seen what you know now then
Wasn't it easier in your firefly catching days
When everything out of reach someone bigger brought down to you
Wasn't it beautiful running wild till you fell asleep
Before the monsters caught up to you

It's alright just wait and see, your string of lights are still bright to me
Oh who you are is not where you've been
You're still an innocent
It's okay, life is a tough crowd
32 and still growing up now
Who you are is not what you did
You're still an innocent

Time turns flames to embers
You'll have new Septembers
Every one of us has messed up too
Minds change like the weather
I hope you remember
Today is never too late to
Be brand new

It's alright just wait and see, your string of lights are still bright to me
Oh, who you are is not where you've been
You're still an innocent
It's okay, life is a tough crowd
32 and still growing up now
Who you are is not what you did
You're still an innocent
You're still an innocent

Lost your balance on the tight rope
It's never too late to get it back

As these lyrics echo through my iPod speakers, I’m left wondering about my past. I’m a human, I’m an 18 year old female, and I do have a past. No past is ever as beautiful as we would like it and it’s all because life was never supposed to be easy. I remember all the lessons my parents have instilled in me. I remember the do’s and don’ts of relationships. I also remember ever error I’ve ever committed and every time I have fallen short. I try everyday to not live with my mistakes but to learn from them and forgive myself for them.
It’s songs like Taylor Swift’s “Innocent” that reminds me I’m not the only one. “Today is never too late to be brand new.” There’s definitely truth in those lyrics. As a child of God, we are all forgiven. I’m reminded of that every day. I have bible verses taped, post- it- noted, and written all over my dorm room. I look at them for inspiration and reminders that my life is a gift and a lesson. One day I’ll enter the kingdom and even with my many mistakes, I’m still allowed to be innocent. Jesus was born, died, and rose again so that I (and you) could be innocent. All we have to do is admit our faults and realize that only through him, can we get there. I may only be 18… But as a child of God, I learn more about myself and God every day. That’s all that really matters. Not my past.
